According to statistics, approximately 3,000 children each year in China suffer from end-stage liver disease due to various congenital diseases, and the mortality rate exceeds 90%. Among them, the most common is congenital biliary atresia. If there is no active treatment, 80% will die within 1 year of age because of liver failure. Liver transplantation is the only effective way to treat children with end-stage liver disease. The success rate of surgery is more than 95%. Generally, the prognosis is good. They can live and work like normal people.
In 2013, SMIC initiated the "SMIC Liver Transplant Program for Children", with annual donations to the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation. The donation has funded liver transplants for impoverished children at Renji Hospital in Shanghai and drew attention to their needs from the local community. The "SMIC Liver Transplant Program for Children" is a long-term charitable donation project. Motivated by SMIC, the program gradually radiated from the semiconductor industry to the whole society, and became a common mission and responsibility of public welfare, for the benefit of society.
As of 2019, the "SMIC Liver Transplant Program for Children" has received a cumulative total of RMB 24.80 million in donations. A total of 440 children have been funded to complete the surgery and given a second life.
